Spirits Certification!?!

This morning I sat for the Society of Wine Educators CSS exam. If you’re wondering, CSS stands for Certified Specialist of Spirits. The test is 100 multiple choice questions which have to be answered in one hour or less. The test covers all seven major spirits classifications (e.g., Whiskey, Vodka, Brandy, etc.) and focuses on the world of distillation and spirits production.

I’ll be honest, the test was no joke. It was hard (fingers crossed I passed – to pass you need 75 correct answers) but not impossible. The study guide covers all of the testing topics so if you put in the work you’ll do well.

I started studying about two weeks ago – I read the study guide twice, created flashcards and answered most of the questions at the end of each chapter. However, the best preparation was my time spent professionally at a spirits and wine company and this blog. This blog has caused me to do blind vodka tastings (which helped immensely in terms of flavor wheel and sources of flavor questions), try different spirit types (mezcal, sotol, etc.) and do research on some of my favorite brands.

The best part, I met some very cool people in the industry this morning who have the same love and passion for adult beverage that I do.

I get my score in 2-4 weeks….and then I’ll decide what wine certification I’m going to register for :)

To be continued….

Cheers,
The Liquor Lady
